Spanish Level 3: big jump in difficulty?

ARMINO115

I recently finished Level 2 of Rocket Spanish and just started with Level 3. Lessons 15.1 as well as the 2 language & culture lessons 15.6 and 15.7 which I did were all fine. Then I got to lesson 15.2 and it's just so tough! The list of vocab on the exercises is very long (100!), the sentences are quite complex, and in some cases the speaker speaks really really fast!

In Level 2 I would go through the Hear It Say It and Write It exercises maybe 2 or 3 times (as in, once the whole thing, then another 1-2 times repeating only the items I didn't score as good), then the Flashcards maybe twice, and then the Know It once, and I'd be done. I don't remember exactly when I started, but I think it took me about 5-6 months to finish level 2, putting in time pretty much every day.

For lesson 15.2, I've gone through Hear It Say It and Write It maybe 5 or 6 times each by now, and still have dozens of items that I've not yet scored good. And even the ones that I score good, I struggle with them on the flashcards. I like a challenge, but I also like to feel like I'm making progress, and this is just overwhelming me!

I know I could just keep going and figure out the answer myself, but I am curious from someone else who has already gotten further than me: is the rest of level 3 like this? Or is it just some isolated lessons like the one I'm doing now? Cheers!

I started Level 2 about a month ago and I felt something similar about Level 2. I have to hurry spoken answers as the sentences have become more complex and I have to think a bit more, and I often run out of time. Vocabulary hasn't been a big issue for me, but complexity has definitely gone up in Level 2. Nothing I can't handle, but it is making it a bit more challenging. Glad Level 3 is a ways off!

¡Hola ARMINO115 y Scott_C!

My apologies for chiming in a bit late on this discussion!

The Audio lessons do indeed see an uptick in difficulty with each level of Rocket Spanish, in terms of both speaker speed and sentence complexity. You'll also notice an increase in the amount of Spanish-only chit-chat between the speakers as they take you through each lesson. These jumps in difficulty are intended to get you ready for faster speaking speeds and common turns of phrase used by native speakers; however, it's true that they can also make the Audio lessons feel a bit overwhelming at the start of each level!

If you find yourself struggling, I would recommend that you take it easy on yourself in the first couple of modules - perhaps allot yourself more time than you normally would to get through the lessons and shift to doing two or three Language & Culture lessons between each Audio lesson. (The Language & Culture lessons also see an increase in speaking speed and difficulty with each level, but they tend to be easier to adapt to because these lessons are more self-paced and take you through things more gradually.) Then, at the end of each module, you might want to try going back to the Audio lessons at the start of the module and running through them again - as you get used to the new speed and sentence structures, you should start to find that your second pass through the lesson becomes much easier!

I hope that this is helpful for you! Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Saludos,

Liss

Hi Liss thanks for the reply! It took me a very long time to make it through that one lesson! The ones that I've done later are indeed tougher than Unit 2 but not quite as tough as 15.2! I've got into a rhythm and hope to finish sometime in the summer! :)

My observation (maybe also relevant for you, Scott?) is that it seems the lessons incorporate material from previous lessons in the same unit, so as a result the ones at the start are a bit tougher because it's mostly new stuff.

And Liss yes in Level 2 I did the L&C lessons at the end always but this time around I was already using them as a break between the really big audio lessons!

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, both of you! And Liss, I notice there were a few people commenting on the voice recognition not working well, I've not had any issues either in the app (Android) or web browser (using Chrome as you suggest, with Firefox it doesn't work well).

Good luck with Level 2 Scott, I'm sure you'll get into a good flow and it'll get smoother as you get used to the higher difficulty :)

Thanks LIss!

I enjoy the Spanish only chit chat in the dialouge lessons. Actually have to think through what they say (and sometimes look stuff up) and I love that Amy doesn't directly translate, but says something in English that helps you guess at what Mauricio just said.

I do wish there was more time in some of the “speak it” sections - in a few cases you only get 1 second longer than the native speaker and these sentences are sometimes complex.

Good point ARMINO115 - I found 8.1 to be very hard but later lessons definitely were easier (especially 8.5 Ser and Estar review). That is why I do them in order as I noticed the same thing. They lead you down the path if you just let them.

Good luck to you ARMINO115 with Level 3 - I look forward to getting there someday!

¡Hola ARMINO115 y Scott_C!

I'm glad that you've found a rhythm that works for you with the Level 3 lessons, ARMINO115! And thanks for letting us know that you aren't experiencing any difficulties with the voice recognition - it's good to hear that it's working well on your end! :)

It's also helpful to hear what's working for you in the Audio lessons, Scott_C - I'll pass that feedback onto our development team. As for the tight window of time that you're experiencing with the voice recognition for some of the phrases, I know that this issue has already been flagged for our technical team to look into; I will check in with them and make sure they're aware that this is still causing problems.

Saludos,

Liss
