What is your favourite thing to watch and listen to in Spanish

Hi all,
In my down time I have been watching my binge box sets in Spanish.

I am currently enjoying Breaking Bad. The language is sufficiently  challenging, but not too complex if you know the story line. Sub titles in English helps to keep a tab on the plot when it gets complicated.
 

What do you recommend?
 

If you are looking for something you can probably keep up with while not using subtitles, Extra is a Friends like show (but about 10% as entertaining) that was made to be used by learners. They keep it on the simple side and repeat phrases (sometimes). I typically have to watch an episode twice to really keep up, but I am much more a beginner.  You can find it on YouTube (below), but I am sure there are other sites that must carry it.

I use subtitles for complex shows or films. “Once upon a time in Hollywood”, no subtiles needed. “Breaking Bad”, essential to follow the plot. I don't watch much TV etc. But I have found that if I focus on one thing, my Spanish expands. Words, and verbs that I found hard to remember get reinforced with a great ah ha moment, and are finally a permenant fixture in my vocabulary. 

Agree complexity matters. I tried to watch Casa de Papel without subtitles. So much fast action and drama meant I was quickly lost.  Unlike most people (I think), I don't find English subtitles all that useful as I get too focused on them and the Spanish grammar means some of the words are in a different order, so I am unable to glance down for a word check. I do use Spanish subtitles sometimes but I find they are often not matching what the actor said, which is super annoying.  Spanish is not unique in this. When I knew enough German to hang on to a conversation (long gone), same thing - the subtitles often said something different than what the actor said. Obviosuly it is not dramatic and doesn't take away from the story, but if you are trying to learn it is frustrating.

I feel your pain! It is true that the English subtitles often don't match the Spanish… BUT … if you notice ths then progress is being made. I always feel like a champion when I realise this, as clearly I am llistening, even subconciously. It is true, one can become too focussed in the English subtitles, but as said if you notice the differences, then you're half way to nirvana!

Excellent point on progress, I hadn't thought of that! Now that you mention it, when I am watching a show in English that has Spanish speakers in it, I have noticed times where it doesn't match and I have noticed “ah, they had to say tengo que…” and I often find myself thinking of Spanish words when I am watching an English movie. Mind you, not complete sentences but “proud = orgullo”, etc. Thanks for the lift!

I'm watching the free content in Dreaming Spanish.  They have videos of varying lengths and every topic under the sun.  It's designed for students, at various levels from beginner to advanced, with speakers from various Spanish speaking countries.  I like it because it's all in Spanish, and you don't need subtitles. 

I have found “Help Me Learn Spanish Joel” podcast has been helpful. He interviews people in most episodes only in present tense and he speaks slowly. The response is usually faster, so it helps you hear both speeds and you can anticipate the answers based on the question. Every 3rd episode is for more advanced people and he uses faster speech and uses all tenses.

I have not heard of dreaming in Spanish. Looks like I could learn a lot there. Even listening to some intermediate ones I can understand some of it. Mustbe my Portuguese, as am still a beginner in Spanish

Thank you all bits help. I watched several shows on Nettflix, but have just got rid of our Nettflix and I will miss the shows in various languages. I find that I prefer watching something in the original language even if I need subtitles, as I feel shows loose some of their intergrity and meaning when not in the original language
