Latin American pronunciation of "ll"

Years ago when I studied Spanish, we were taught to pronounce “ll” as if it were the “y” in young or year. My Argentinan friend pronounced it as if it were the “j” in just.

In the Rocket lessons, I'm hearing it pronounced more like “j” than “y”.  SO -

Either pronounciation has drifted over the last 50+ years

or

What I was taught was an over-simplification

or ???

 ¡Hola Janet33!

Thanks for your question!

The Spanish double L can actually be pronounced either way (i.e. like an English “Y” or similar to an English “J”) - it just depends on where the speaker is from.

We have a section on this in Lesson 1.8: “How to Pronounce Spanish Words" (under the heading “Letters With Different Sounds”) that explains this a little more and provides some examples for practice, if you'd like to check it out!

Saludos,

Liss
