¿Le gustaría papas fritas? o ¿Le gustarían papas fritas?

In Rocket Spanish Conversation Lesson 4.4, El Restaurante, Amy asks "¿Le gustaría papas fritas o papas al horno?

Why should that not read "¿Le gustarían papas fritas o papas al horno?".  Is not the grammatical subject of the verb gustar plural ("papas fritas")?

That would be my take. Though an interesting thing in French is that when you order fries, for example, you use the singular. Maybe the same thing happens in Spanish. We'd need a native speaker to chime in on that one.

 

Perhaps it is because she is asking  to select one of two options?  
Interesting question, though.  I'll ask at another Forum I frequent and see if I can get a good answer.

That's a good idea.  Thinking of it that way would rescue it a little for me.  Getting a feel for "me gusta... / me gustan..." and the subjunctive are two of my biggest challenges in Spanish!

Shifting to the present tense, I prefer to think of "me gusta un plato de papas fritas" and "me gustan papas fritas", in terms of symmetrical constructs in English, such as, (for example, in response to a waiter), "a plate of chips appeals to me" and "chips appeal to me", respectively.  (In English, that contrast is not evident in the conditional.)

En francés cuando uso el subjunctivo no sé que lo estoy usando ni aún menos por qué, lo utlizo de forma automática. Empecé a aprender español solo usando el indicativo así que ahora tengo que
pensarmelo en el momento de elegir el modo adecuado.

Fascinante. Siempre me había dicho que sería muy fácil para alguien de Francia de dominar el subjuntivo en español. Pero entiendo lo que tú dices: es un modo de verbo que se siente y para ti es transparente (en francés). Para mí, el hecho de que lo haya aprendido en francés (de manera mecánica) finalmente me ayuda ahora en español. Quién lo hubiera pensado.
