What is the difference between Pido (vb. Pedir) meaning to ask, and Puedo (vb. Poder) Gracias

Two different verbs. Pedir means to ask for or request, Poder means to be able to. Pido ayuda - I ask for help. Puedo ayuda - May I help. I hope this is what you're asking...

To add: A lot of people mix up "pedir" and "preguntar". Pedir, like jchamb said, is to ask for something, or to request. Preguntar, is to ask a question.

I just want to add that I find myself using "pedir" in a restaurant setting. I will ask my companion: ¿Qué va a pedir? (What are you going to order?)

Thank you, that was exactly my question.
