Yo qué sé

I came across this phrase in a book I was reading. The Google translation:
- I do not know

From the context, I got the gist of it but translating word for word independent of context, I would not have understood this phrase.
- ¡Yo qué sé! - Don't ask me! The meaning changes as an exclamation! This makes more sense to me as it sort of says: "Me, what do I know?"

Hola Ricardo,

Gracias por tu respuesta.  ¿Quién pensaría que había une discusión sobre la expresión? Un comentario de alguien me hizo reír:

"...I could say that this is my favourite untranslatable expression in Latin-Spanish."

Saludos,
Steven
