el gato= the cat
la gata= the female cat
los gatos=the cats (all males or male and female mix)
las gatas=the cats (all females)
el perro=the dog
la perra=the female dog
los perros=the dogs (all males or male and female mix)
las perras=the dogs (all females)

I didn't know la gata was a female cat... we have a female cat and call her el gato. Thanks!

That is an excellent answer by Patrice B as it covers all gender and quantity. I only have male cats and I believe they are starting to understand the Spanish I am teaching them. Sometimes they are the only ones around for me to practice on! :)

It is interesting how a word like cántaro...pitcher?...can mean cats and dogs. But then English has its share of ambiguous, confusing idioms.
