Chico/chica means "small"?

These lessons use chico/chica for “small” rather than pequeño/pequeña. Doesn't chico/chica mean “boy/girl” in many spanish-speaking countries? Is "pequeño understood in South America? Gracias!

If you look in Spanish dictionaries and in the RAE, small is the first definition, then child.

In my experiences, locals definitely know both pequeño and chico (as small), but regionally prefer one or the other.

Related, what about poco? That is small as well, but seems to refer to a quanity.
