How to pronounce the "r"

Hola, I ordered this course a few months ago, but just started using it about 2 weeks ago. My family and I am learning a lot. There are so many words and different pronounciations that it seems overwhelming at times. Quick question: How do you pronounce the "r" in quiero or para? Does it sound like a "d" and would be pronounced quierdo or parda? That's what it sounds like to me. Thanks for the help. By the way, this is the best program I've seen. As far as my experience goes, the " r " gets pronounced : " R ". Most of the time, it gets NOT softened , like many Americans pronounce their " r " When it sounds like a " d " as you suggest, it can be that they are talking to fast , or something like that.
