La enfermera - female nurse, el enfermero - male nurse.

Another interesting thing I recall about professions is that when you are stating your own profession or that of someone else the indefinite article (i.e. un or una) is omitted.
Soy enfermera is correct versus Soy una enfermera.
However, the exception is when you are including an adjective.
Ella es una compasiva enfermera.
