¡Qué sorpresa!

Hola a todos, There are many words in Spanish that have multiple meanings muñeca can be a doll or the wrist, fresa a strawberry or a drill in dentistry, to name two. No doubt many are familiar with these and many others, but I recently came across something that was a complete surprise to me. Manzana has always meant apple to me but it can also mean a block. It's synonymous with cuadra when used in that manner. Maybe this it well known but it was a revelation to me! Saludos, Ricardo

A couple of weeks ago I mispronounced manzana while talking to my tutor. It came out Matanzas, as in the city in Cuba. She pointed out to me that it also means a killing or slaughter. But my personal favorite of the moment, having just reviewed lesson 6.7, is quedar. To fit, to suit, to be remaining, to express location or agreement...what a lot of responsibility to give one word! And I notice that these words with multiple meaning can further challenge a new speaker who is trying to figure out what context the word is in. But if learning a new language was easy, the world would be full of polyglots.
