In lesson 1.3 we are given this question Quiero algo para tomar. = I want something to drink. But my spanish teacher insists that I should use beber for "to drink" and that tomar means "to take". Is this a regional idiom then?
tomar or beber?

Hola Marietr,
Yes it's regional and both are correct. Cristian Montes de Oca, a native speaker, has offered information about this on the forum. You can search it out as this has been discussed before.

Marieter,
P.S. if you scroll down on the vocab quite a bit below your question you will find the discussion about tomar vs. beber. By the way, I order in Spanish when my wife and I go to a couple of restaurants and the question regarding drinks is always: ¿Para tomar?
