I've been using Rocket French and German for awhile now and both have been working really well for me. I would recommend the Rocket Languages website to friends looking to learn new languages through a user-friendly interface.
I'm impressed by the clever and practical approach in the Rocket German audio lessons. The "Nik-Paul" conversations are full of humor that makes it more than palatable to repeat the lesson as often I need to. The suggestions for using new words and phrases in situations beyond the ones specifically addressed in the lesson help expand my horizons and enhance the value of each lesson. The written materials complement the conversations and are organized into manageable chunks. Between those and the chances to self-test online with comprehension and pronunciation, the course goes the extra mile in encouraging me to push myself.
I have not yet progressed very far into the course, but for as far as I have gone, Rocket compares favorably with Pimsleur courses I have used. I like the available transcripts and computer material. Being able to actually see the words helps a great deal in getting the pronunciation down faster correctly. The recordings are a little too chatty and waste a bit of time better devoted to the language itself. I look forward to your Russian course.
I teach the "Theological German" class at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary for Ph.D. students developing their proficiency for advanced biblical and theological research. To complete the course prerequisite of one year of adult-level German I encourage my students to take the 3 Rocket German courses.
They're a great foundation! ... und so viel Spaß! :)
At first, I wasn't entirely sure about Rocket Languages. I had seen reviews on other websites saying that it's teaching methods are comparable and even superior to Rosetta Stone, but I wasn't convinced... until I actually tried it for myself.
As a native German born, I wanted to get back to my roots and re-learn the language I lost when I moved to the states 15 years ago. And let me tell you, if you ever plan on using the language you're trying to learn, Rocket Languages is the place to learn it from. My mother, who is completely German, was completely astonished at my grasp of the language after using Rocket Languages.
Beyond being extremely good at teaching the language, Rocket Languages also manages to keep you motivated as well, with fun activities such as flash cards, to their really cool badge system, which makes you feel accomplished as you reach milestones.
After trying out this product, I can proudly say I'll be coming back in the near future for my next Language Package, French!
Rocket German picks up where the (excellent) Michel Thomas German course finishes. Once you have learned the basics of German sentence structure using Michel Thomas, Rocket German gives you a wealth of vocabulary to use in your conversations. It's friendly to listen to, and the vocab "sticks" unless the typical "Learn German in your car" style CDs which just throw vocab at you, and hope that you'll remember a small percentage of it.
The audio lessons are interesting and keep your attention unlike other audio programs. The exercises and transcripts are very helpful for reinforcing the German I am learning from the audio clips. I like how you can mark vocabulary words that you still need work on and how you can review them later from the website. Other audio programs I have tried don't even provide a transcript of what is being said, so it is hard to learn to read and write in the language if you've never seen the words! The games are also a fun break from studying. Better yet, Rocket German is affordable unlike some other options I have considered.
The rocket languages has very good language courses. I have learned a lot both in the German and France languages and I always come back to the side to learn more. Thank you for an excellent site. Baldur
